One Dead After Shooting Near NW OKC Park

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

An outraged mother is looking for answers after her son was gunned down in a northwest Oklahoma City park Sunday evening. The man was shot in broad daylight after an apparent argument.

Oklahoma City police identified the victim as 26-year-old Rodney Hennesy.

Overwhelmed with grief, Tonya Hennesy says she got the call from her daughter just after 6 p.m. that her son Rodney Hennesy had been shot at the park at 82nd and Harvey.

"They started arguing and they got into a conflict, and the boy shot him," Tonya said.

The suspect, she says was a longtime friend of her son. Tonya doesn't know what they were fighting over that led to Rodney being shot. His body lay behind a car as police investigated and kept family and friends back from the crime scene tape.

Tonya says Rodney's father was also gunned down nearby 25 years ago. She says Rodney was in the area visiting one of her friends. The same area at North Highland Park is where many children were outside playing.

As more family and friends came to Tonya's side, she remained stunned as to why someone took her son's life.

“They been friends for life. I promise you I'm going to get justice, I promise you,” she said.

Police say they have a suspect identified, but no arrests were made. Detectives said they wanted to thoroughly investigate the scene and did not want anyone coming near the evidence.

Tonya says Rodney turned 26 years old just a few weeks ago. Police questioned several witnesses, including Rodney's sister. The suspect's name has not been released. Police say they hope to release more information on this shooting Monday morning.
