Zach Boychuk netted the game's winning goal with 1.6 seconds left in regulation, as the Oklahoma City Barons fell to the Charlotte Checkers 2-1 Saturday night at the Cox Convention Center.

A slashing penalty assessed to the Barons' Curtis Hamilton with 27 seconds to play gave the Checkers a power play in the closing moments of the third period. After third consecutive Charlotte faceoff win in the Oklahoma City zone, Trevor Carrick found Boychuk in the high slot, where Boychuk wristed a shot that glanced off the shoulder of Barons goalie Laurent Brossoit and into the Oklahoma City net for the game's decisive goal.

Each team was whistled for five infractions, with all three goals coming with the man advantage.

Oklahoma City's Brad Hunt broke a scoreless tie at 15:55 of the first period with the Barons on the power play stemming from a Brock McGinn slashing call at 15:12. With commotion in front of the Charlotte net, Matt Ford sent the puck to the right side of the crease, where it caromed off a skate and right to Hunt, who flipped the puck over the shoulder of crouching Checkers goalie John Muse for a 1-0 Barons lead.

Charlotte tied the game at 6:17 of the second period with a power play goal stemming from a holding the stick penalty to the Barons' David Musil at 5:51. After a shot by Brody Sutter was blocked in front of the Oklahoma City net, Phil Di Giuseppe grabbed the loose puck on the right side of the net and pushed it past Brossoit.

The Barons outshot the Checkers 30-23 for the game, holding the advantage in all three periods.

With the loss, the AHL's West Division-leading Barons dropped to 36-18-3-3, while the Checkers improved to 25-31-5-1. Winning Saturday night, the San Antonio Rampage climbed to within two standings points of Oklahoma City for the lead in the West Division.

The Barons and Checkers meet again Sunday, March 15, in a 4 p.m. start at the Cox Convention Center.
