Fraternity Fallout: Hield, Spangler Speak On Controversy

Posted: Updated:
NORMAN, Oklahoma -

The University of Oklahoma is in an uproar over racist remarks made by SAE fraternity members. Local and national attention has honed in on Norman as the fraternity has since been shut down.

Reaction has poured in from all over campus, including OU student-athletes. Coach Bob Stoops and the OU football team attended an on-campus protest, but they weren't the only Sooners with an opinion.

OU guard Buddy Hield, fresh off of being named Big 12 Player of the Year, spoke with one of the fraternity's members and found out more information on the incident.

“One of the guys from the fraternity texted me a message, one of the guys who I'm cool with, and said it was the younger guys that did it, that the older guys are more mature,” Hield explained. “But they've got to face the consequences for what they did. We've got to move on from that.”

Forward Ryan Spangler was clearly disappointed in the developments and didn't mince words when describing his emotion.

“It made me sick to my stomach,” Spangler said. “I thought our country was changing a little bit, but obviously it hasn't.”
