OKLAHOMA CITY -

Police have identified the suspect and victim in a deadly officer-involved shooting that took place in southwest Oklahoma City early Sunday morning.

According to police, officers were called to a report of shots fired in the 3600 block of SW 38th St. at 3:38 a.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived on scene they encountered the suspect, now identified as 40-year-old Aurelio Duarte, standing outside his house holding a rifle. Police say they gave Duarte orders to drop his weapon, but he instead pointed the weapon at an officer, at which point the officer opened fire, shooting and killing Duarte.

Also at the scene, officers located a victim, later identified as 51-year-old Montiel Militon, who was suffering from gunshot wounds to his hand and abdomen. Police believe Duarte had shot Militon, prompting the initial call of shots fired. It is unclear what events led up to that shooting.

Militon was transported to a local hospital via ambulance and is expected to survive.

The officer who fired the fatal shots, identified in a report as Sgt. Michael Newton, has been placed on routine administrative leave pending this investigation.
