OSU Baseball Falls To Auburn

Posted: Updated:

Oklahoma State had its five-game winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon as Auburn knocked off the 10th-ranked Cowboys, 9-2, at Plainsman Park.

With the loss, OSU fell to 6-4 on the season, while Auburn won its seventh-straight game to improve to 9-2.

Five Cowboy pitchers combined to surrender a season-high 17 hits, while the OSU offense managed just six hits and struck out 12 times.

“Auburn did a good job of stringing together multiple innings of run scoring there in the middle and strung together 17 hits, which is pretty impressive considering we had some top arms available today. And their pitchers mixed well and threw different pitches in different counts that we didn't handle like we needed to,” said OSU head coach Josh Holliday. “I'd like to believe that our team is certainly capable of playing better than we did. We had opportunities early in the game to push them a little bit, which is always what you like to do on the road, and we let those get by us.

“We just made too many mistakes. And when you make mistakes against a quality team, you're going to get beat. We'll get better as a team and grow, make corrections, and we'll evolve into a team capable of taking those opportunities and capitalizing in the future.”

The Cowboys took the game's initial lead in the third inning on Kevin Bradley's two-out RBI single, but Auburn would take go on top off OSU starter Jon Perrin in the fourth when Hunter Tackett mashed a two-run home run to right field.

OSU tied things up in the fifth. Tim Arakawa led off the inning with a double, and a one-out triple by Dustin Williams that landed on the chalk down the right field line made the score 2-2. However, the Cowboys failed to take the lead as Williams was stranded on third following back-to-back strikeouts by Conor Costello and Jon Littell.

In the bottom of the fifth, Auburn took a lead it would never surrender as the Tigers tallied the second of their four consecutive two-run innings to take a 4-2 advantage.

The Tigers rallied for five more runs over the next three innings to put the game away.

Perrin suffered the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season as the senior right-hander allowed four runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings of work, while AU reliever Cole Lipscomb worked the final 4 2/3 and struck out eight to earn the win.

OSU closes out its trip to Alabama Sunday against Western Illinois at 10 a.m.
