Common Mistakes When Driving In Winter Weather
OKLAHOMA CITY - With another round of winter weather heading our way, Oklahoma roads could soon get messy.
Driving on snow or ice can be scary and your first instinct when you find a slick spot is likely the most dangerous.
Most of us when we hit that slick spot on the road we grab the steering wheel we start trying to over correct or even trying to punch the break to stop our moving vehicle from spinning out and hitting another car.
But Precision Driver Training instructor Bill Hughes said it's all about being prepared before hitting the road.
Before the next round of weather, he gave me some tips on how to recover from icy skids in the OSU-OKC skid car.
He said it's better to steer out of the skid than slam on the brakes.
“The biggest mistake drivers make, too much speed and following too close they don't leave big enough cushions between the vehicles,” said Hughes.
If you are going to chance it on slick roads, Hughes said to think of it as walking on ice. Take it slow and allow plenty of time.
