The University of Oklahoma baseball team suffered a 4-3 defeat to Washington State after getting the potential game-tying run into scoring position in the top of the ninth at Sloan Park on Thursday evening. The loss dropped the Sooners to 3-4 on the season, while the Cougars improved to 3-2.

For the game, Oklahoma outhit WSU, 8-6. Junior first baseman Kolbey Carpenter went 2-for-4 in his fourth multi-hit game of the season. His second hit of the game came with a runner on third and one out in the ninth. Junior third baseman Anthony Hermelyn had started an OU rally with a one-out double over the third base bag. Freshman pinch-runner Quin Walbergh then moved to third on a fly ball out. Carpenter hit slow ground ball towards the hole on the left side and beat the throw to first to score the runner. He moved up to second on a passed ball before Cougar closer Ian Hamilton recorded the final out of the night for his second save of the season.

Washington State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on redshirt-senior right-hander Robert Tasin. A hit-by-pitch and a single put runners on the corners with one out. Left fielder Ben Roberts delivered a well-placed ball into left-center that went for a double to score a run. With two runners in scoring position, center fielder Cameron Frost drove in two runs on a difficult groundout to short up the middle. Roberts immediately rounded third upon hitting the bag and sprinted home to beat the throw from first.

Right-hander Sean Hartnett (1-0) pitched 7.1 innings, while tossing just 83 pitches in the win. He allowed two runs on six hits and no walks to go with two strikeouts. Tasin (1-1) took the loss in 2.1 innings of work. He gave up three runs on three hits and four strikeouts. In relief, redshirt-junior lefty Adam Choplick (Denton, Texas) tossed 4.1 innings, allowed one run, struck out four and walked five.

Second baseman Ian Sagdal recorded the only two-hit game for the Cougars as he went 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI.

The Sooners are back in action Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT when they take on the University of Washington back at Sloan Park; the spring training home of the Chicago Cubs.

Notes:

· The Sooners repeated a lineup for the first time this season.
