NICOMA PARK, Oklahoma -

Nicoma Park police are stepping up the fight against illegal drugs in eastern Oklahoma County.

The department wants to add a K9 unit to the force. The dog is picked out, but money's needed to close the deal.

The Nicoma Park police chief said Highway 62, which runs through town, is a hot bed for drug activity and a K9 is needed to stop the drug trade flowing in.

Chief Rob Groseclose said a K9 is what his department has been missing.

“I am so excited. We have the potential to really, really make a difference. Drugs are everywhere, and you know, we have to do our best to minimize it, to make the city better,” said Chief Groseclose.

Lex, a two-year-old 90-pound European bread German Shepard, is trained and ready to start the job. Chief Groseclose and soon-to-be handler officer Doyle Baker handpicked Lex.

“We were in Little Rock, Arkansas Tuesday looking at several different ones, and I think we found the right dog,” said Groseclose.

But the chief said the department still has a little way to go when it comes paying for Lex.

Thanks to private donors, the department has put down a deposit on Lex and bought a used Tahoe outfitted specifically for a K9.

“If Choctaw calls for assistance, that's where we go. If they call and ask for a dog, we go. It's the same as them asking for another police officer,” said Groseclose.

The police department's seven full time officers and 20 reserves serve all of eastern Oklahoma County.

“We will go as far as backing all of the other agencies that will be available for service for all of these smaller agencies out here, out east,” said Groseclose. “It's going to be a fantastic addition to the entire police department.”

The department is trying to raise about $20,000.

If everything goes as planned, Lex and his partner will be ready to hit the streets sometime in April.

A fundraiser is planned at Jim's Famous Chicken in Nicoma Park March 5th and 12th open to close. Visit the Facebook page for more information.
