OKLAHOMA CITY -

100 marathons in 100 days. One man is making his mission to run from coast to coast to raise money for clean water.

“I've walked across the country back in '08 and '09. And back in 2005 I cycled across the country so I figured why not run it,” said Daren Wendell.

Wendell's journey began on January 1st on the Santa Monica Pier.

Averaging about 29 miles a day, about three miles more than a marathon, Daren Wendell is on country-wide run.

It's a run with a mission to raise money and awareness for Activewater, an organization which brings clean water to communities around the world.

“In Ethiopia, a lot of times they'll walk two or three miles two times a day, so you're looking at like two hours a day just to get water. And this water, it's not like they are walking to a clean spigot they are going to the closest pond the closest water source,” he said.

Training for his four-month journey began two years ago.

He's not making this country wide trek alone. Along the way runners have signed up to join him in his route.

Twenty nine miles have not only taken a toll on Wendell's body, but also the nearly one dozen pairs of shoes he'll wear out.

“I literally will run through the soles from running on concrete, to running through the desert, and to climbing barb wire fences,” said Wendell.

Wendell knew the 11 state and nearly 30,000 mile journey would be tough and at times painful, but he runs for the thousands of Ethiopians who will now have access to clean water.

Wendell will make his final leg of the journey on April 10th arriving in Times Square.

He has raised close to $71,000 for his cause.
