A team of Cleveland County Sheriff's office employees raised $3,000 for Special Olympics Oklahoma during the Polar Plunge event on Valentine's Day.

According to the Sheriff's office, employees dressed up in superhero costumes and dived into frigid water as they participated in the Special Olympics Oklahoma Norman Polar Plunge on Campus corner.

The team, consisted of deputies, detention officers, and civilian employees, raised the most amount of money of all six teams at Saturday's event, officials said.

Jennifer Lightle, development director for Special Olympics Oklahoma, said 42 people participated in the Norman Polar Plunge. The fundraiser brought in $8,500 for the state organization. Lightle said 100 percent of that money stays in Oklahoma. Funds go towards helping Special Olympics athletes.

This is the 14th year for the Polar Plunge, and the fifth year in Norman, Lightle said.

“We are honored to work with the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office,” Lightle said. “They have a huge impact on all 10,500 athletes that we serve. We look forward to working with them in the future.”

Sheriff Joe Lester said he was proud that CCSO employees united and raised money for Special Olympics Oklahoma, an organization that serves thousands of individuals with special needs.

“I'm glad our department could be a part of this year's Polar Plunge,” Lester said. “We will continue to support Special Olympics and its athletes in any way we can.”
