The Sequoyah County Sheriff's Department is investigating after someone illegally dumped butchered cow heads and calves near the Robert S. Kerr Dam on the Arkansas River.

Sheriff Ron Lockhart said deputies found 24 large cow heads and three fully developed calves dumped near a boat ramp. He said it appears the cows were butchered for the meat.

"There were around 14 ear tags on the ears of the cow heads, and we are currently tracking down owners of the cows at this time," he said in a news release.

Lockhart said they are investigating to see if it could be a case of a processing plant dumping waste, adding that it was unclear why three small calves would also be at the scene.

"We will locate the person who dumped the cattle heads," he said.

The remains were buried at a landfill. The Oklahoma State Department of Agriculture will aid the Sheriff's Department in the investigation, the release states.
