USGS: Earthquakes Shake Near Cherokee

CHEROKEE, Oklahoma -

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported two earthquakes near Cherokee, Tuesday afternoon.

According to the USGS, the 3.5 magnitude quake was more than three miles deep. It shook the area three miles southeast of Cherokee and 32 miles northwest of Enid at 3:24 p.m.

Then at 3:37 p.m., a 3.3 magnitude earthquake was reported four miles southeast of Cherokee and 31 miles northeast of Enid. That earthquake was also more than three miles deep, the USGS said.

There are no reports of major injury or damage at this time.

According to the USGS, earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 3.0 are generally the smallest ones felt by humans. Damage is more likely from quakes at a 4.0 magnitude and higher.
