Two Oklahoma City police officers were honored for their efforts during the Plaza Inn shooting case.

A female caller told police on Oct. 8 that the subjects were trying to kill her and holding her captive.

Authorities said Sgt. Grant Brooks and Sgt. Cody Koelsch both walked up to room 167 at Plaza Inn to try and locate the suspect.

Oklahoma City police said as soon as the door opened, the suspect fired at the officers from inside. Sgt. Brooks was shot in the left forearm and Sgt. Koelsch was shot in the right arm and his ballistic vest stopped a round as well.

Police said the two officers received the Order of the Purple Heart for their “bravery and courage after being shot in the line of duty … by a suspect determined to kill them.”

A third officer would exchange gunfire with the suspect while the suspect took the female hostage outside of the room. Authorities said the suspect then shot and killed the hostage and was shot immediately by another officer.
