Authorities are investigating an accident involving a police officer's patrol car in McLoud, Oklahoma, on Tuesday.

According to authorities, just before 7 a.m., a patrol car driven by McLoud Officer Alan Smith was hit by a garbage truck on Highway 102 near Parkwood Road. The officer's car was struck on the driver's side.

All lanes of north and southbound Highway 102 are closed between Parkwood Rd. and Wolverine Rd., according to ODOT. Drivers are strongly encouraged to find an alternate route such as US-177 and allow plenty of extra time to travel in the area.

The closure is anticipated to last through mid-afternoon Tuesday.

Officer Smith has been medi-flighted to the OU Medical Center, suffering from several internal injuries, according to authorities.  He's in a medically-induced coma. Authorities said he is in serious condition, but is expected to survive.

The garbage truck driver suffered minor injuries, and has been treated and released from the hospital.  Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers continue to investigate the cause of the collision.

According to authorities, Smith has been a full time officer with the McLoud Police Department for two years.

Several Agencies assisted McLoud authorities during the accident, including Pottawatomie Sheriff's Department, Citizen Pottawatomie Nation Police, Pottawatomie District Attorney's Office and Shawnee Absentee Tribe Police.
