News 9 Viewers Donate Money For Shot Dog's Surgery

A family who pleaded for help after someone shot their dog was overwhelmed by the generosity of Oklahomans.

Two days after sharing their story with News 9, the family was able to take the dog, Shadow, in for surgery because they raised enough money through donations.

The price tag for Shadow's surgery was more than $3,000.

“The way she wags her tail and wants to come up and see him, even sedated, just makes you want to cry,” said Shadow's owner, Brooke Smith.

Shadow underwent surgery on Monday at Blue Pearl Veterinary Hospital in Oklahoma City.

Someone shot the 7-month-old Siberian husky in the jaw near the family's home in Rush Springs.

The motive may have just been for a thrill.

The bullet and several fragments were lodged in her jaw, preventing her from eating.

“She doesn't deserve the pain she's in, but I know after today, she'll start feeling better,” Smith told News 9.

Faced with having to put Shadow down or come up with all the money up front before surgery, the Smiths created a GoFundMe account.

Thanks to the outpouring of support, they received more than the $3,200 needed for Shadow's surgery in less than 24 hours.

“I can't even tell you how happy I am,” Smith exclaimed. “I started crying, I just looked at everyone at my work and said, ‘We did it, we actually did it,'” Smith said.

Smith and her family know a lot of good people donated money to Shadow that they could have used at Christmas time for something else.

“We do love each and every person that donated because if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be having the surgery today and he wouldn't have his Shadow for Christmas," she said.

The veterinary staff at Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners said the surgery went great.

She may be able to go home as early as Tuesday.

The family said they know they may never find out who shot the dog, but said another dog on their street was shot around the same time.
