Instant Analysis: OSU Shocks Sooners In Bedlam

Norman -

Oklahoma State shocked Oklahoma 38-35 in overtime on Saturday in Norman. Here's the instant analysis, stick around for the full game recap.

OSU breakdown:

This will be one of the most satisfying wins in school history. After a five-game losing streak, most of which were blowouts, Oklahoma State rose out of the ashes and took down the arch-rival Sooners. OSU got a miraculous 92-yard punt return from Tyreek Hill with less than a minute to play to force overtime and silence Memorial Stadium. Then in overtime, after OU kicker Michael Hunnicutt pushed his kick wide to the left, OSU's Ben Grogan drilled a 21-yarder to seal the upset. It was a wild and wacky Bedlam that will go down in history. Oh yeah, and Oklahoma State is now bowl-eligible; call it the cherry on top.

OU breakdown:

Up two scores with five minutes to play, it looked like the Sooners were headed for another Bedlam win. But defensive and special teams breakdowns (along with some spectacular plays by OSU) haunted Oklahoma down the stretch, and triumph turned to heartbreak REALLY fast. The loss caps an extremely disappointing season for Bob Stoops' Sooners, who entered the preseason as the No.4 team in the nation.

Play of the game:

Hill's punt return is not only the play of the game, but the play of the season for the Pokes. OU's previous punt was fair-caught by Hill at the OSU 15-yard line, but thanks to a running-into-the-kicker call, Oklahoma elected to re-kick and gain even more field position. So had OU simply decided to let the play stand, Oklahoma State would have needed to travel 85 yards with no timeouts and less than a minute to play. Instead, Bedlam.

Game ball:

OSU freshman quarterback Mason Rudolph played beyond his years once again. Rudolph followed up his terrific debut at Baylor by throwing for 273 yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Sooners.

Injury bug:

It's fair to wonder if things would have ended differently had Sooner stars Sterling Shepard and Semaje Perine not left with injuries. Shepard left very early on, but Perine's impact was enormous. The freshman sensation dashed for 151 yards and two touchdowns before leaving the game in the second half.

Breaking through:

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy won for the first time in Norman, improving his record to 1-4. This was OSU's first win in Norman since their shocker back in 2001.
