4.0 Magnitude Quake Shakes Up Payne County

A 4.0 magnitude quake struck at approximately 9:54 p.m., 4 miles northwest of Perkins, Okla., 5 miles south southwest of Stillwater, or about 45 miles north northeast of the OKC metro, at a depth of about two miles.

Residents in Payne County were shook up by a strong earthquake late Thursday night.

A 4.0 magnitude quake struck at approximately 9:54 p.m., 4 miles northwest of Perkins, Okla., 5 miles south southwest of Stillwater, or about 45 miles north northeast of the OKC metro, at a depth of about two miles.

Dozens of News 9 viewers wrote in on Social Media claiming to have felt the shaking. So far, no damage or injuries have been reported.

Thursday was a seismically active day for the state. Fifteen earthquakes have been recorded thus far, all at least at a 2.5 magnitude and higher.

One in Enid (2.7), Four in Perry (2.9, 2.9, 2.7, 2.6), One in Mooreland (2.7), One in Langston (2.9), One In Cherokee (2.6), One in Spencer (2.8), Three in Medford (3.5, 2.8, 2.5), and Two in Guthrie (3.4, 2.7).

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 3.0 are generally the smallest ones felt by humans. Damage is more likely with earthquakes at magnitudes of 4.0 and higher.
