An elderly woman is dead and her husband in critical condition after a head-on crash on Highway 60, about four miles west of Nowata.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers say Mary Wendt, 77, was a passenger in a truck driven by her husband John Wendt.

Their truck crossed the center line for an unknown reason just before 2 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 2014, and hit another pickup head on. John Wendt, also 77, was freed by Nowata firefighters and taken by medical helicopter to Tulsa. Troopers say he is in critical condition with internal and other injuries.

A juvenile from Bartlesville was behind the wheel of the other vehicle, a collision report states. The 17-year-old male, whose name was not released due to his age, was admitted to a Tulsa hospital where he is said to be stable with internal injuries.

His 14-year-old female passenger was also taken to the hospital with internal injuries. She is also stable, the trooper said in his report.

Everyone but Mary Wendt was wearing a safety belt, according to the trooper's report. The cause of the collision is listed as driving left of center.

Troopers say John Wendt's condition at the time of the crash is unknown.
