It's one of the most requested items on a kids Christmas list, and thanks to the Salvation Army and the Women's Auxiliary, more than a thousand kids across the metro will get a brand new bike.

The tables were set on Friday and boxes of new bikes directly from the manufacturing plant were ready to be assembled by hundreds of volunteers.

“One of my favorite days of the year will be tomorrow. We'll have 125 volunteers that have signed up tomorrow. I expect to have more than that,” said D'Anna Pulliam with the Women's Auxiliary.

The 'Bucks for Bikes' program started nine years ago by D'Anna Pulliam and since that time, she said the amount of donations and volunteers have skyrocketed.

“Our first year was in 2006, and that first year we preordered 44 bikes,” said Pulliam.

But this year, with the help of more than $50,000 in donations, D'Anna said this will be their biggest bike assembly ever.

“It's just incredible, and it will be very busy, very fast paced,” said Pulliam.

“Last year, the challenge was 861 bikes,” said Major Charlotte Gargis with the Salvation Army.

This year they will assemble more than a thousand.

“It's one of the most requested items on their angel tree list every year,” said Gargis.

“I never dreamed that we would have $40,000 to spend on bikes this year, but we did,” said Pulliam.

Even though many children will have their Christmas wish granted this year, there are still more than 2,000 children who need to be adopted through the Angel Tree.
