An Oklahoma County Sheriff's deputy arrested a telephone company employee who is accused of selling his company's equipment as scrap.

According to the Sheriff's Office, on November 21, a deputy saw a telephone company employee drive his company truck into a recycling center just off W. Reno and N. Villa. After the suspect left, the deputy checked with the recycling center to see what the telephone company employee was doing.

Employees at the recycling center told the deputy that the man had been selling industrial batteries and copper that belonged to the telephone company. The deputy happened to have been a former employee of the telephone company. He said he knew that this wasn't the proper procedure for selling the equipment.

The deputy conducted an investigation and reviewed surveillance video and sales records. He determined that the suspect, 28-year-old Dallas William Thomas Martin, had sold about 8,000 pounds of company equipment over nearly a 2-year span. Conservative estimates are that the telephone company lost tens and thousands of dollars in equipment as a result of this crime.

Martin was arrested and booked on complaints of theft of copper, grand larceny, and two counts of obtaining money by false pretenses.
