4.2 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Up Alfalfa County

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake rumbled near the town of Cherokee, Okla., in Alfalfa County, Monday afternoon.

The quake was recorded at approximately 1:05 p.m., seven miles north northeast of Cherokee, or about 104 miles north northwest of the Oklahoma City metro area, at a depth of three miles.

The earthquake was originally reported to be a 3.6 magnitude, but was upgraded to a 4.2 at 3:51 p.m. There have been no reports of damage or injuries associated with this earthquake.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 3.0 are generally the smallest ones felt by humans. Damage is more likely with quakes at magnitudes 4.0 and higher.
