Neighbors Stunned After NW OKC Murder

Neighbors pledged to take back their streets after an overnight shooting in NW OKC.

A woman was found severely injured in the yard of a vacant home and later died.

Police made an arrest shortly after.

Since 1971, Agnes Smith has called Briarwood Estates home and is the neighborhood block captain. Smith passed out pink flyers notifying neighbors of their meeting addressing Saturday's deadly shooting.

"This was the first really serious thing that has ever happened here," Smith said.

Just after 2 a.m., Oklahoma City police got the call of a shooting in the 500 block of North Sweetgum Avenue.

"We found a white female laying in the yard of a vacant house," said Oklahoma City Police Department Capt. Nate Tarver.

Investigators said the woman was shot at least four times and died at the hospital.

A woman next-door saw a car speed down the street with one woman's legs still hanging outside the window while the victim laid just beneath the neighborhood watch sign.

"There was a pile or something laying in the yard, so she went to investigate and found out that this girl was very, seriously hurt and was trying to breathe,” Smith said.

The woman had three gunshots wounds in her chest and one in her back shoulder.

Police arrested 26-year-old Charles Chambers, who has previously been convicted of assault and battery. Investigators said they believe he was driving a white Lexus that belonged to the victim.

"I am stunned that something like this has happened in our neighborhood," said one neighbor named Vicki. “It's unnerving to think of something like that going on, it's a nice neighborhood, normally, most everyday it's a serene, nice place to live.”

One witness next door to the vacant house said she's been having nightmares since the shooting. So to reassure neighbors, Smith went door-to-door spreading the word.

"It's something that happened too close to home," Smith said.

The Briarwood Estates neighborhood meeting will be Monday Nov. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the West Tenth Street Baptist Church where an Oklahoma City police officer will speak.
