Snow Storm Brings Slick Roads, Closes Schools Across Oklahoma

Slick and hazardous roads are reported and many schools are closed on Monday in Oklahoma, after a snow storm swept across the state on Sunday.

Weather Update:

It's a very cold day in store for Oklahoma. Morning temperatures around the state are in the teens and 20s with slick roads and light winds. We will up to freezing later today (33 degrees) with increasing sunshine and 10-15 mph winds, switching from NW to SW late day. This will melt much of the snow/ice on the roadways, only to have it re-freeze again right after sundown.

Black ice will remain the biggest issue this morning and again later tonight. With the low temperatures in the teens, it will be important to bundle up exposed skin, especially for the kids who many are out of school today.

On a good note, in a day or two we will start seeing upper 40s and 50s for the afternoon highs for much of this week.

Road Conditions at 8:15 a.m.:

According to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, road conditions are improving Monday morning in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metros. Crews continue to monitor for isolated slick spots and treat as needed in these areas.

Highways in the panhandle are snow-packed and slick, and drivers are urged to use caution when traveling. Slick and hazardous conditions are reported in areas of western and central Oklahoma, and counties in south-eastern and north-eastern Oklahoma are being treated for icy spots, particularly on bridges and overpasses.

Drivers need to remain alert for road clearing equipment on highways and interstates throughout the morning and stay at least 200 feet behind these trucks.

If you must travel out of state, you are urged to check area road conditions before heading out.

Accidents:

Multiple accidents have been reported across the Oklahoma City metro area Monday morning. 

Emergency crews are on the scene of an accident involving an overturned semi-truck in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 at 2nd Street in Edmond. The outside lane was blocked. It reopened at about 8 a.m.

News 9's Rachel Calderon reported that traffic is still backed up in the area. 

Crews also responded to an injury accident at the Kilpatrick Turnpike and Highway 66, and another one at S.E. 59th Street and S. Peebly Road. 

News 9 Storm Tracker Val Castor was on the scene of an accident near Meridian and Reno, where a car reportedly hit black ice and crashed into the back of a trailer. 

Joshua Tate, 26, was killed after rolling his pickup truck on a snowy road in Beckham County, Sunday morning.

School Closings:

Oklahoma City, Edmond, Moore, Norman, Piedmont, Putnam City, and Yukon are just a few of the larger districts that have decided to close.

Classes at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford and the OU campus in Norman have also been canceled. Classes at Oklahoma Christian University, University of Central Oklahoma, and OSU-OKC will begin at 10 a.m.

EMSA Responses:

EMSA has been working around the clock since this weather rolled into the metro. Since midnight Sunday, crews have responded to 236 calls, most of them accidents. They've only gotten one call that was fall-related.

EMSA officials said there was an increase in the number of rollover accidents yesterday.

At the Will Rogers Airport, only one flight, United 1349 from Oklahoma City to Washington Dulles International Airport, has been canceled.
