OKLAHOMA CITY -

The American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) World Championship Show kicks off this weekend at the State Fair Park in Oklahoma City.

The event takes place from November 7 through November 22. It's the pinnacle event for American Quarter Horse owners and exhibitors around the world, who must qualify for the event by earning a predetermined number of points to compete in each of the classes representing halter, English and western disciplines.

According to event organizers, more than 3,610 entries from many countries, including the U.S., Australia, Brazil, Germany and more, are competing for the 100 world championships at this year's event.

The show brings $20 million in economic impact to Oklahoma City, officials said.

Edmond native Karen Ogle is running for the All Around Amateur Award during the event. This award is one of the more prestigious awards at the show.

Some of the industry's top performers, prospects and breeding stock will enter the sale ring beginning at 10 a.m. on November 15.

A variety of family-friendly events will take place during the show, including free Nutrena Ride the Rail/Ride the Pattern clinics taught by AQHA Professional Horsemen. Event-goers may also attend the free trade show, which features more than 140 vendors selling home d├ęcor, jewelry, tack, western attire and more.

The new Kidz Corral is a place for children of all ages to have some fun. It includes a make it/take it craft area, coloring mural and kids play area. On November 15 and 16, children under the age of 12 get free admission to the show and professional horsemen will be leading barn tours departing from the Kidz Corral throughout the day.

Founded in 1940, the American Quarter Horse Association is the largest equine breed organization in the world. It has a membership of more than 270,000 people in 86 countries, and has registered more than 5 million horses in 95 countries.
