VERDEN, Oklahoma -

History is known to repeat itself from time to time. And for residents in one small town, they know their home may not be what it once was, but that's not stopping them from at least painting a picture of times past.

Residents of Verden are proud of their town's history, so much so that history is jumping off paper and into paint. And it's coming to life one brush stroke at a time.

The hustle and bustle of the 1940's might be gone with the cotton business Verden once thrived on.

"Absolute beautiful and hustling to nothing,” said muralist Joy Willingham, “(The buildings) were horrid."

But the spirit of 70 years past is once again in full color. Willingham, who's painted over 700 murals, has decided to take on one more project.

"I love the town. I love the people," said Willingham.

Over the last month, Willingham along with five others, including fellow Verden residents, Becky and Julie, are starting over with the town and recreating Verden's roaring 40's.

The actual businesses are still closed seven days a week and will open on the 12th of never. But the general store, the grocery store and even the barber shop are back, which has the town buzzing once again.

"It's really been exciting. That's the best word, exciting," said one Verden resident.

"I think it's beautiful, I think it's wonderful," said another Verden resident.

The group didn't work alone. All the paint involved was donated.

"Everybody's so for this,” said Willingham.

And the month Willingham and the others spent painting history? That was donated as well.

"I never dreamed it would turn out like it has,” said friend, Julie Jacobs.

"It all came together, like it was meant to be. Like it was meant to be," said Willingham.

The group of six plans to host a block party in downtown Verden on Nov. 22 to celebrate their picturesque revival.
