SHAWNEE, Oklahoma -

A homeowner in Shawnee, Oklahoma, shot a burglary suspect early Wednesday morning, according to Shawnee police.

Officers said the suspect broke into a home around 3 a.m. on Market Avenue. The suspect reportedly kicked in a back door, and that woke up the couple who was inside sleeping.

Investigators said the homeowner grabbed his gun, confronted the suspect and shot him once in the chest. The suspect then took off running from the home and was found hiding underneath a car at another home nearby.

Shawnee officers said the suspect was taken by ambulance to the OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City where he's currently in surgery.

Police are still speaking with the homeowners to gather statements and collect evidence.

The suspect has not been identified.
