A suspect is dead after being shot by a LeFlore County deputy Monday during a hostage situation in Spiro, according to the LeFlore County Sheriff's Office. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.

KSFM said the suspect took four people hostage at a home on Shelley Carlile Drive after a robbery, according to Sheriff Rob Seale.

According to OSBI, around 3:00 Monday afternoon an elderly Spiro homeowner called to report a man had entered her home, stole her purse then ran away.

When the LeFlore County Sheriff's Office arrived, they said they found the suspect had walked inside another home in the 17000 block of Shelley Carlisle Drive.

OSBI said the suspect was “reportedly wielding several guns.”

They said officers surrounded the home and yelled for the suspect to come out. Reports say the man walked onto the front porch with his guns.

OSBI says officers told the man to drop the guns, but instead, the man lifted a gun towards the officers. That's when one LeFlore County deputy shot and killed the man, reports say.

The man was identified as 36-year-old Freddie Cooper.

OSBI is collecting information and will provide their findings to the district attorney who will determine if the shooting was justified.
