Anastasia Baranova and Kateryna Shkot became Oklahoma Baptist University's first tennis national champions Friday, taking the NAIA doubles bracket of the ITA/USTA National Small College Championship.

Baranova and Shkot lost the first set to Alicia Rodriguez and Jessica King of Lindsey Wilson, 6-1, but evened the match at 6-3 in the second set.

Baranova and Shkot were on the cusp of losing the decisive set, down 5-2, but rallied to win five straight and take the 7-5 win.

The tandem now advances to the ITA/USTA World Series in doubles, which throws all the bracket winners from NAIA, NCAA Divisions II and III and junior college into a four-team tournament.

Baranova and Shkot battled Division III champions Caroline Ward and Katie Kuosman of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. That match is set for noon, Central time.

On the other side of the bracket are Division II champions Linda Fritschken and Emma Onila of Barry, taking on junior college champions from Tyler JC, Joanna Savva and Paige Murdock.

Baranova also is in the singles championship contest at 7:30 a.m., taking on Nour Abbes of Xavier.
