OKLAHOMA CITY - Sharon Baldwin and Mary Bishop who sparked the same-sex marriage debate in Oklahoma, are now married.

A U.S. Supreme Court decision Monday effectively made same-sex marriage legal in Oklahoma, 29 other states and Washington D.C.

News 9 followed two women throughout the day Monday who have been a couple for nine years now. They believe the Supreme Court ruling clears an immediate path for marriage equality in Oklahoma.

Earlier in the day Monday, now newlyweds, Jennifer Hasler and Karina Tittjung sat anxiously at the Oklahoma county courthouse.

They waited patiently to get something they never planned to get in Oklahoma any time soon, a marriage license.

“I remember it being a very uncomfortable place to live if you were openly gay, so I never thought in a million years. I figured this would be the last, the 49th out of 50 states to do it,” said Hasler.

“It's just so surreal to be able to get married where we live, and it's so basic to some people, but it's been so hard for us. We've come a long way,” said Tittjung.

The U.S. Supreme Court turned down Oklahoma's appeal which reinstates a lower court ruling that our state's ban on same sex marriage is unconstitutional.

Seven cases in five states including Oklahoma were turned away.

“People are finally starting to get it, it's really amazing,” said Hasler.

“We finally got to get married,” said Hasler.

Their marriage license was in hand, and a dream for the couple in the state of Oklahoma became a reality.

“The best day ever. I'm overwhelmed. It's amazing it all happened so fast,” said Hasler.

Jennifer and Karina told News 9 they did consider leaving the state to get married, but decided to wait.
