Oklahoma Football: News and Notes From Bob Stoops' Press Conference

Posted: Updated:
NORMAN, Oklahoma -

It's here once again: Oklahoma-Texas Week. The Sooners and Longhorns will face off for the 109th time at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday, amongst all the fried foods you could ever dream of. Both teams are coming in off a loss, which puts a slight damper on the proceedings, but regardless of the teams, the game is always something to look forward to.

Monday, Bob Stoops and OU players met with the media to talk about the loss to TCU, as well as look ahead to the matchup with the Longhorns. Here are some notes and tidbits from the press conference.

-Oklahoma and Kansas State will kickoff at 11 a.m. on Oct. 18. It's the first home game for the Sooners since Tennessee on Sept. 13.

-Bouncing back from losses has been a specialty for the Sooners under Bob Stoops. Oklahoma has never lost back-to-back regular season games in the Stoops era, going 31-0 following a loss. The Sooners have also won 10 straight games dating back to 2009 against teams they lost to the year before. The last team OU lost to two years in a row was Texas. The Sooners lost to the Longhorns in 2008 and 2009.

-There seems to be either confusion or a lack of desire to take responsibility on the defense for the Sooners' mistakes on Saturday. After the game, there was plenty of talk about things OU hadn't seen on tape and on Monday, defensive end Chuka Ndulue reinforced that notion, saying that was a big reason why the Sooners found themselves in a 14-0 hole in the first quarter. However, cornerback Julian Wilson said everything TCU did on Saturday the Sooners practiced for during the week. Interesting for sure.

-Offensive tackle Daryl Williams really wanted to let you know the Sooners would treat Texas like any other team this week. He must've said it 10 times.

-Quarterback Trevor Knight said he was very pleased with how the team has responded to the loss on Saturday, saying conversations he has had with individuals have been very encouraging.

-Knight said he had not called Katy Perry yet. Obtaining her number has obviously the biggest obstacle.

-While running the ball more than he had in the previous four games this year probably led to some minor cramping, Knight said the cramps weren't affecting his passing ability in the second half.

-Stoops mentioned twice in his opening statement he and his team are very aware of what happened against Texas last year. Don't let anyone fool you when they say they're not thinking about it this week. They definitely are.

-The disappointment in Stoops' voice when discussing how the Sooners didn't play well on Saturday was still very apparent, perhaps even more so than immediately after the game on Saturday. Stoops insisted the team was ready to play and had two great weeks of practice. For whatever reason, OU just didn't perform well against the Horned Frogs.

-Stoops did say all the mistakes were easily correctable, as most of them were a simple issue of fundamentals. One such example was not properly identifying which player to block on Samaje Perine's fourth down run that was stuffed late in the game.

-Stoops didn't have a firm answer on whether or not Keith Ford would play against Texas on Saturday. The Sooners will have to go through the rest of the week before determining whether or not he'll suit up.

-While he didn't call out players by name for missed assignments and other mistakes, Stoops was pretty frank when he said cornerbacks Zach Sanchez and Julian Wilson did not have a good day.
