OKEMAH, Oklahoma -

A metro animal rescue group has uncovered another dog shooting.

The Underdogs Rescue group said Bowie, a Great Pyrenees, was shot somewhere in Okemah with a shotgun and suffered for days before getting medical treatment.

Veterinarian Dr. Valerie Bays of the Animal Wellness Center in Oklahoma City said she could not save his leg.

“The infection that had set up in the muscle, in the bone there, would just not allow us to try to save the leg,” Dr. Bays said.

Neighbors in Okemah found Bowie on their porch, suffering from a terrible leg wound.

They do not know the owners and believe he may be a neighborhood stray.

Dr. Bays later confirmed Bowie was shot with a shotgun at pretty close range.

“A lot of little tiny shotgun pellets that we retrieved," said Dr. Bays. "He had an open fracture, which means that the bone in his leg was actually sticking out.”

Dr. Bays said the wound gaped open for as many as five days before neighbors found him and got him help.

Bowie was also malnourished at about 40 pounds underweight.

“It's very difficult, especially considering how sweet this dog is,” Jared White with The Underdogs Rescue said.

It's déjà vu for The Underdogs Rescue, the group paying for Bowie's treatment.

Someone shot Gunnie, a shepherd mix, with a .22 in the neck in Arcadia.

“Unfortunately, these are the ones that are brought to our attention,” said White. “Statistically, I don't know what it is, but if we're seeing two in a week, there's got to be more out there,” he added.

Bowie's injuries are a little more devastating, but he is trying to bounce back.

“Although he tires very easily, wagging his tail and giving kisses, so he's doing really well,” Dr. Bays explained.

Bowie's infection will keep him at the vet for a few more days before going to a foster home.

It is still unclear who shot him or the other dog, Gunnie.

Gunnie will be at a foster outreach event called “Barktoberfest” this weekend just making an appearance.

The event will be Sunday, October 5 at Choctaw Creek Park, located at 2001 N. Harper Road in Choctaw.
