TU Volleyball Tops Oral Roberts in Four Sets in Home Opener

TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team won its home opener against Oral Roberts, 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 23-25, 26-24), as senior Valerie El Houssine notched her fifth double-double of the season (17 kills, and a season-high 24 digs), while Erica Bohannon recorded a match-high 19 kills and Bailey Clampitt tallied 45 assists in front of a ruckus crowd at the Reynolds Center, Friday night.

The Hurricane dominated the match in the early going, jumping out to a 12-7 lead in the first stanza and forcing Oral Roberts (5-7) to call a quick timeout. Tulsa stayed in control of its crosstown rivals following the break, not allowing ORU to get within five points the rest of the set.

TU hit an astonishing .542 as a team in the opening frame, producing 15 kills on 24 attacks and committing just two errors. Bohannon led all players with six kills in the stanza.

The second set proved to be more of a challenge for Tulsa, with five ties and two lead changes. However, the home court advantage powered the Hurricane past ORU to take a convincing 2-0 lead in the match, as Bohannon and El Houssine recorded five kills in the frame.

The third set was tense throughout, with 10 ties and seven lead changes in a back-and-forth battle. Through the first 20 points the score was knotted at 10-10, as El Houssine was responsible for three of the points in that stretch.

The Hurricane started to pull away, taking a 17-13 lead, giving them the biggest of the set. The Eagles wouldn't go quietly, going on a 10-2 run to give the visitors their biggest lead of the match, 23-19.

After a TU timeout the Hurricane fought back to get the score within one, 24-23. ORU ended all doubt of a sweep, after a Laura Milos kill sent the match to a fourth set.

In the fourth the Hurricane jumped out to a quick 8-5 lead, the biggest lead from any team in the set. The Eagles bounced back to tie the game, 12-12 and eventually take a brief lead at 15-14, forcing Wills to call a timeout. ORU was forced to call a quick timeout after TU ran off three-straight points to take a 17-15 after the break.

The Hurricane did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the way, as Bohannon finished the match in heroic fashion, recording the final two kills of the match to send the home fans happy.

Tulsa will take on McNeese State tomorrow night a 7 p.m. for the final match of the Golden Hurricane Classic.
