NEWCASTLE, Oklahoma -

A possible child abduction attempt in a Newcastle neighborhood this past weekend has police and Newcastle School District officials on alert.

Police said a man riding in what a witness said was a black Jeep Cherokee tried to coax a 9-year-old boy into the SUV around 10 p.m. Saturday.

Police said it happened as the young boy was walking his dog on the 2900 block of NW 33rd Street. Police said the 9-year-old ran away from the suspect and back to his house.

His parents notified police. Newcastle Schools Superintendent Tony O'Brien alerted parents Monday morning. “It was a significant incident you know, and the family is somewhat nervous at this point,” he said.

Police are also investigating an incident two weeks ago. Police said an elderly man approached a child as the child's father was escorting the child to school. Police said the elderly man had some puppies he wanted them to see.
