OKC Homeowners Encouraged To Apply For Storm Shelter Rebate

Many Oklahoma homeowners want to install a storm shelter, but some are discouraged by the cost. The average storm shelter can cost from $2,000 to $8,000.

But if you own a home in Oklahoma City, you're encouraged to apply for a storm shelter rebate through the city. There's a grant of more than $2 million funded by the American Red Cross.

Lottery applications are open to people whose primary residence is in Oklahoma City limits. More than 800 home owners will be picked to receive a rebate.

“Of the 830 addresses that we will provide rebates for, 400 of those will be allocated for Ward 5, which was most heavily hit by the May 20th tornado. If a person's home was destroyed and or it sustained so much damage it needed to be demolished, they will be given preference,” said Frank Barnes, Oklahoma City Emergency Manager.
