The doctor is in time for some advice from Dr. Phil. Today he's got some tips on how to talk to young people about tragedy or violence.

Reassure your child about his or her safety. Answer their questions honestly. Hug your child to provide comfort. When you talk, use your normal voice. A whispery voice makes it scarier.

Limit media exposure for very young children. Dr. Phil says they don't have an ability to truly understand death and violence.

Encourage older children to tell authorities when they suspect something bad, remind them telling is not tattling. The good doctor says carrying out your normal routines reinforces the fact that the incident is isolated and your child is safe.

For more advice from Dr. Phil, catch him every weekday at 3 p.m. on News 9 starting on Monday.
