OSU Basketball Welcomes Eight Newcomers

Oklahoma State fans will see many new faces on the court for the Cowboy Basketball team in the near future. A total of eight newcomers/redshirts join eight returning lettermen for the 2014-15 season.

Oklahoma State fans will see many new faces on the court for the Cowboy Basketball team in the near future.

With the recent official announcement that Joseph Burton had cleared his final academic hurdles, a total of eight newcomers/redshirts join eight returning lettermen for the 2014-15 season.

Anthony Hickey, Jr. is a senior who transferred from LSU this summer. The starting point guard for the Tigers for three seasons, Hickey is originally from Hopkinsville, Ky. He averaged 8.4 points, 3.7 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game last year at LSU.

A pair of junior-college transfers have joined the ranks at OSU.

Anthony Allen, a 7-1 post player originally from Jamaica, averaged 11 points, 8.4 rebounds and 6.2 blocks per game last season at Lamar State-Port Arthur in Texas.

Jeff Newberry was a juco All-American at New Mexico JC last season after averaging 13.5 points and 3.7 assists per game. He led his squad to the second round of the NJCAA Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan., last March.

Jeffrey Carroll is a redshirt freshman who came to Oklahoma State last season. A 6-6 wing player, he averaged 22.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game as a senior in high school in 2012-13, earning first-team All-Region honors.

Four incoming freshmen round out the Cowboy newcomers.

Joseph Burton, a 6-6 wing from Atascocita High School in Houston, was a finalist for the Guy V. Lewis Award last season, honoring the top player in the Houston area. He averaged 19.3 points per game and was named first-team All-State Class 5A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

Tyree Griffin, a 5-10 guard from New Orleans, La., was named the Louisiana Large Schools Player of the Year after leading his Landry-Walker HS squad to the Class 4A state championship. He averaged 17.2 points, six assists and 5.6 rebounds per game.

Tavarius Shine, a 6-6 wing originally from Irving, Texas, spent last season at Fork Union Military Academy. As a senior at MacArthur HS in Irving, he averaged 20 points per game while garnering co-MVP honors in District 6-5A.

Mitchell Solomon, a 6-9 post from Bixby, Okla., averaged 18.3 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game last season for the Spartans. He shot nearly 56 percent from the floor and was a consensus All-State selection. He was also a member of The Oklahoman's Super 5 Team.

The Cowboys begin practice for the 2014-15 season on Friday, Oct. 3. OSU has an exhibition game scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 8, vs Missouri Western, and open the new season on Friday, Nov. 14, hosting Southeastern Louisiana.
