A new retail development broke ground in west Tulsa Wednesday, just one day after we learned of a new outlet mall proposal near Tulsa Hills. Developers are ready to start building The Walk in Tulsa Hills, two miles from the proposed outlet mall.

The progress drivers can see as they drive by is evidence that west Tulsa is booming – and The Walk in Tulsa Hills is just more proof.

When the project is complete there will be a movie theater, a Mathis Brothers and even a grocery store; but the most exciting thing may be the hundreds of jobs.

“Oh its exciting growth development for our area, our region, and I think it's a wonderful opportunity,” said Tulsa resident, Tonya Freese.

It's called The Walk in Tulsa Hills, and there will be a lot do, see, eat and buy. Developers said breaking ground in that area was simply good business.

“Yes we were really fortunate. We were really drawn to this piece of property because of the success of Tulsa Hills; it's been a very successful development,” said Gary Parkes, with Parkes Development Group.

He did say he thought the area needed more, and when construction wraps on his new development, there will be 150,000 square feet of shopping and entertainment - from an Aldi grocery store to Mathis Brothers to Chuy's.

There will be some anchor stores that are household names to Tulsa, and some shops that are new to Oklahoma.

“I think the real exciting thing here is Gander Mountain, the sporting goods store with outdoor hunting and fishing. I think it's going to be an asset that this area doesn't have,” said Caitlin Boewe.

All of it is expected to be a great boost to Tulsa's economy.

“We project that total sales at stabilization will be in the area of $50 million a year, which is significant, and the annual payroll from all of the operators and occupants in the center will be about $9 million a year,” Parkes said.

That breaks down to 500 people with full and part-time jobs, and an entertainment and shopping center for everyone in the family.

The Walk in Tulsa Hills should open next spring and stores will be added until the project is complete next September.
