The annual crime report for 2013 was just released. It is more than 130 pages of information about the crime stats the OSBI had collected statewide.

Here's how it breaks down. As it turns out for the most part, both violent crimes and nonviolent crimes are down this year compared to last.

Murders are down by more than 5%, Robberies are down by the same amount. And aggravated assault are down by almost 10%.

As for the nonviolent crimes, burglaries are down 6%, Car thefts are down almost 4%. And thefts are down only by 1%.

But there is one statistic that is up and that is rape. It's actually up 20% since this same time two years ago.

“I would hope that this number increasing is that more people are coming forward,” said Karla Docter with the YWCA sexual assault services division. “More people are receiving services, and getting the help that they need.”

Docter and has worked closely with rape victims. She says most times, they are simply too afraid to file a report. And many consider it a dirty little secret.

“Some people don't tell anybody for months, weeks, years after the assault,” said Docter. “I worked with one gentleman who said he was going to take this to the grave.”

Docter says a lot of times victims will not file a police report against someone they know, especially if it is a family member.

“While you hate them for what they did, you know, it's hard for them to make that police report. You don't want to see them further hurt either,” said Docter.

According to the crime report released by the OSBI, there were more than 1,762 rapes reported statewide in 2013, 450 of those occurred in Oklahoma City. That's almost 30 percent higher than what was reported in OKC in 2011.

But Docter says looking over the crime report, the definition of rape is very narrow, and she believes not all sexual reports are being included like those involving male victims, same sex offenses or statutory rape.

“A very small percentage of rapes are actually reported to law enforcement. And statistically it can vary from 10 to 40 percent of all rapes are actually being reported,” said Docter.

Docter adds it is extremely important for all sexual assault victims to get help and to have a good support system. And say they have a hotline that is manned 24 hours a day.
