Governor Announces Support Of Limited-Use Medical Marijuana

The Governor supports what's called Cannabidiol oil derived from the marijuana plant.

Some research has shown it to be beneficial for seizures and strokes, giving parents in need one last chance at desperation.

Amy Hilterbran's son, 12-year-old Austin, suffers from Dravet Syndrome.

"What if it were your child," asked Hilterbran. "We've tried everything."

So Hilterbran rests all her remaining hope on CBD oil with small amounts of THC, the chemical that makes you feel high, but supporters say helps control seizures. 

A type of CBD oil is already legal in the U.S. but contains no THC.

The Governor is now asking legislators to look into a CBD oil that has a maximum level of .3 percent THC, a level so low the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics says it won't intoxicate kids, and it's an oil, not smoked.

Eleven other states already have similar laws.

"Research studies on trial periods to see if this helps our families," Governor Mary Fallin said.

Representative John Echols originally called for the interim study.

"As fast as we can work, we will work," said Rep. Echols. "I say that, because I understand."

Which is enough for Amy, who feels she's running out of time for more studies and needs results now for her son. So, she's still backing the medical marijuana petition.

"So that way everyone who needs it can use it and can benefit from it that can utilize it," Hilterbran said.

Governor Fallin was also asked if this timing had anything to do with her campaign, and she said no, she's been looking into this issue for the past six months.
