Norman police have identified a man who was injured in an officer-involved shooting Saturday afternoon.

According to Norman police, officers responded to a report of a suspicious person and vehicle in the 2500 block of 169th Avenue N.E. just before 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Police said when they found the vehicle, a man, later identified as 44-year-old Jimmie Alfred Wheeler, fled and a pursuit began.

The pursuit ended after Wheeler crashed his vehicle near 192nd Avenue and E. Rock Creek. Police said two Norman officers and a Cleveland County deputy arrived on scene, and just after 1 p.m., the Norman officers radioed that shots had been fired.

Captain Tom Easley with the Norman Police Department said the preliminary investigation indicates no shots were fired by the deputy.

Wheeler was then transported to the OU Medical Center. Sunday morning, Norman police said after medical personnel release Wheeler from the hospital, he will be booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center on a charge of eluding a police officer.

According to Norman police, Wheeler had two active Oklahoma County arrest warrants for the alleged crimes of robbery with a firearm and possession of a firearm after a felony conviction.

Police said the officers involved are in good condition. They have been placed on administrative leave, and their identities will not be released for 72 hours.
