A Midwest City woman is on a mission. She wants to raise money for school supplies for one of the metro's poorest districts. She doesn't have kids at the school, but she wants to do what she can for the kids.

Shana Gurley has no connection to Crutcho School, besides the fact that it’s in her neighborhood. But she says after learning about its extreme poverty level, she had to do something.

“I grew up the same way these kids did. My dad was in prison. My parents didn’t have a whole lot of money,” said Gurley.

Already, just by a single Facebook post Thursday, she's gotten school supplies from as far as Stillwater.

Her Facebook post reads:

“Proceeds from sale will go towards the purchase of student and teacher supplies for a local school! If you bring a supply item from the supply list to the sale, you will receive $0.50 cents off your purchase for each item. Cash, debit/credit and PayPal will be accepted at this sale. Debit/credit cards will be processed securely through PayPal Here software. If you wish to just donate towards the purchase of supplies, donations can be made via PayPal to Shanamichele@gmail.com with “School Benefit” in the notes.”

“I definitely didn’t expect donations like this to come through,” said Gurley.

And she wants those donations to continue to pour in.

“If this goes over as well as I would like it to, I would like to do more schools,” said Gurley.

Crutcho School is nearly at 100-percent poverty, and a couple of miles from Shana's home. All 375 of its students receive free lunches. School supplies will help meet a critical need.

“We have pencil boxes, around 70 notebooks, 60 to 70 boxes of crayons. There’s single erasers, 40 pairs of scissors so far, 20 boxes of pencils, and there’s about 80 glue sticks in there.”

Gurley says that’s all from one donor.

“Why not give them a little extra help so that it’s a little bit easier? And maybe these kids will stay in school too,” said Gurley.

“The kids will come and they will have no paper. They will have no pencils. And they will have no crayons,” said Crutcho School Superintendent, Theresa McAfee.

McAfee says donated supplies helps take pressure off teachers who often buy from their own pockets.

“I would say the average teacher spends a good thousand dollars a year or more out of their pocket every year,” said McAfee.

And McAfee says many parents are working more than one job and more than half are raising their children in a single-parent home.

“So every little bit helps,” said McAfee.

“It feels right to help kids out, give them a little hand up,” said Gurley.

Gurley will host a garage sale at her home, 403 E. Key Blvd. in Midwest City Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Aug. 8-10.
