School started today for Oklahoma City public school students, a day to meet a new teacher, new classmates, bump up another grade. But 611 third graders in the district, didn't get to do that.

They're repeating the third grade, because they failed a state mandated reading test.

611 kids. Picture that as 28 classrooms full of 3rd graders who are now doing the 3rd grade for a second time.

Imagine the logistical and staffing challenge that is for the Oklahoma City school district. And I'm not dropping the schools in the grease on this one, they're trying. But a lot of parents aren't doing their jobs, encouraging and helping their kids with their reading.

How do I know that? Because OKCPS offered a special summer reading academy to 1,2000 kids who actually failed the test to try to catch up, but only 450 showed up. Mom and dad, that's on you.

Those students who failed the exam will be getting extra daily reading instruction and will have a chance to take the test again in September and October.

It is unacceptable for 611 third graders in one district not to be reading at grade level, and it starts at home.

I'm Kelly Ogle and that's My 2 Cents.
