Red Dirt Diaries: Meet An Oklahoma Dead Eye At Just 15

We are beginning a new series at News 9 called “Red Dirt Diaries.”  It showcases the people and places that make Oklahoma so special.

Ninnekah High School freshman Cale Garrett is back from the National Finals High School Rodeo in Wyoming. While he didn’t place at the top at nationals, the feat of getting there is an accomplish in itself.

The 15-year-old has competed several times in team and calf roping. However, his best chance of advancing to nationals would come in shotgun and rifle shooting.

“You take a deep breath,” says Garrett about his shooting routine.

The teenager practices at home, but is a novice in rifle shooting. In fact, he qualified for nationals in shooting in a tournament for the very first time.

“I didn’t realize what I had done, until a couple days later,” says Garrett, who actually borrowed a gun for the competition.

“Cale is pure Oklahoma home,” says Cale’s mother Tammy, who chalks it up to natural talent.

The Garrets, including Cale’s brother and two sisters, made the trip to Rock Spring, Wyo. for the national tournament. Oklahoma did take the team title at the National Finals High School Rodeo.
