Platty, a Tulsa Golden Retriever that gained worldwide attention for his rescue and appearance, died Friday morning.

Platty had inoperable cancer which doctors believe had metastasized to his lungs. He had slowed down quite a bit and was having trouble breathing, according to Karel Bagwell, his adopted "grandmother."

"It was just time," she said. "The vet was good enough to come to the house. He was on his favorite couch, and we were all around him. It was peaceful."

Platty made it almost six months to the day after rescue advocate Allison Elmore adopted him from Tulsa Animal Welfare. Platty became a Facebook sensation for his unique appearance. The cancerous growth on his snout made him resemble a platypus.

Sherry Stinson, a professional photographer who donates her services to help get shelter dogs placed, started a Facebook page for him that grew to over 27,000 likes worldwide.

Fans were inspired by Platty's apparent love of life - and Cheese Whiz - despite his struggles with cancer. They donated money to help with his special medical needs.

The remainder of funds raised for his care will be donated to TAW, Bagwell said.

"They will use it for extra medical attention that some of the dogs need," she said. "They treat quite a few, but sometimes it's just beyond what they can do."
