Teachers at a local elementary school rally around one of their own after her grandson was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

The 2-month old boy is being treated at St. Jude's hospital and the "Mid-Del" school community is helping out with the costs.

The teachers were out Friday and Saturday in the triple-digit temperatures trying to raise money for Knox and his family as they fight Retinoblastoma...hundreds of miles away from home.

“Knox Cancer Out”, the T-shirts say it all. This baby boy WILL beat his diagnosis.

“Knox has retinoblastoma, bilateral. Um tumors in his right eye and his left eye. Right eye was very advanced, left eye was extremely advanced so they had to remove his left eye,” said Know’s grandmother, Rita Richardson.

Knox is one of just 300 people who are diagnosed with R-B every year.

“He's one of their youngest patients there at St. Jude's and he will have six rounds to chemo to kill the tumor that's in his right eye,” Richardson said.

Knox is Rita’s first grandchild.

“I just want him to know how much love, he has and he has already given us.”

He has been fighting cancer from the day he was born.

“He's started smiling at us. He can't see. But he still is smiling when we talk to him. He loves to be talked to. He loves to be sang to.”

Knox's story impacted Richardson's co-workers at Steed Elementary School so much that they banded together to raise funds for medical bills and travel. Knox and his parents have already been at St. Jude's for more than a month.

“My friends are the best, amazing people ever, that you could even possibly hope for to have in your life. They've been extremely supportive, loving, just amazing.”

Knox and his parents still have months of chemo-therapy treatments ahead. They are hoping to finally bring him home for his first Christmas.
