Welcome back to the real world. After the record breaking cool spell that we enjoyed last week, it is back to a more typical July weather pattern; at least for a while. Temperatures today were the warmest since Monday of last week, but it was still below the normal value of 94. Although the temperature was just below normal, the humidity has made it feel much warmer with heat index values over 100 at many locations today. Notice the max/min temperature map on the right and also the max heat index map, both of which are courtesy of the OK Mesonet.

That will be even more of an issue for the next two days and heat advisories and/or excessive heat warnings have been issued for much of NE OK for Tuesday and perhaps into the day Wednesday as well. Fair skies and light southerly winds tonight should result in morning lows in the lower 70s for the most part which is close to normal. But, our daytime highs will be in the mid-upper 90s and heat index values will likely top out around 105 or more which is in the dangerous category. Thus, the heat advisories/warnings which have been issued depending on your location.

More of the same is expected for much of the day Wednesday, but there will be some changes taking place later in the day. A weak frontal boundary still looks like it will make it through much of the state shifting our winds back to a more N or NE direction. Ahead of the boundary, temperatures will be in the mid-upper 90s once again with heat index values at or above 100. Obviously, the timing of the frontal passage will have a lot to do with those numbers as somewhat drier and not as hot conditions filter in behind the boundary. There will also be at least a slight chance of showers/storms with the boundary late Wednesday and through the overnight hours.

Thursday will then have a NE wind and lots of sunshine for much of the day providing a brief break in the heat with daytime highs around 90 and a negligible heat index.

Not for long though as our winds return to S or SE by Friday through the coming weekend pushing daytime highs well into the 90s once again along with heat index values at or above triple digits.

However, the longer range guidance continues to suggest another more significant break in the heat coming our way by early next week. Don’t get your hopes up that this will be of the magnitude of last week’s record run, but a break in the heat certainly appears likely. Notice the two 6-10 day outlook maps on the right. There is a strong signal of below normal temperatures centered just NE of our state but its influence includes us as well. There is also a signal suggesting above normal precipitation chances during that time period.

So, stay cool in the meantime, stay tuned, and check back for updates.
