The Dallas Cowboys have announced that they are releasing backup quarterback Kyle Orton, which in turn promotes former Oklahoma State Cowboy Brandon Weeden into the backup role.

Orton had been considering retirement and has skipped all of Dallas’ offseason workouts up to this point, amassing nearly $70,000 in fines had he decided to return, according to ESPN.

Dallas signed Weeden, 30, earlier this offseason after the Cleveland Browns cut ties with the former OSU standout. Weeden has thrown for 5,116 yards, 23 touchdowns and 26 interceptions
