OKLAHOMA CITY -

It's a student's beacon for help in cases of emergencies, but a metro university admits it's on-campus emergency phones are not operating at 100 percent.

News 9 has learned four of the 20 emergency phones on the campus of Oklahoma City University are either broken or have been removed.

“It’s a little concerning, especially since OCU is not in the best neighborhood,” OCU May graduate, Madi Alexander, said.

Alexander told us she learned about the problem in February and was surprised to learn that six months later the phones still hadn't been fixed.

“One of the big selling points that [OCU] told us is that you can stand anywhere on campus and see an emergency phone,” Alexander said.

“They have had some maintenance issues from time to time,” OCU Police Department Chief Bradd Brown said.

Chief Brown said the delay on fixing the broken phones is due to the fact that the University just took over maintenance duties. They were being fixed by a private company.

Chief Brown said he expects all the phones to be working by the beginning of the fall semester.

News 9 checked with other metro schools on their emergency phones.

Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond said it installed emergency phones within the past year and a half and has also had some issues keeping them all working properly.

The University of Oklahoma said it’s constantly testing and maintaining its emergency phones.

Oklahoma State University said it just got rid of 10 solar-powered emergency phones they had just off campus, because they were constantly not working.
