Authorities are investigating whether human remains found near a northwest Oklahoma prison belong to an inmate who escaped from the facility in 2012.

Woodward County Sheriff Gary Stanley says residents using metal detectors found the remains Wednesday in a pasture near the William S. Key Correctional Center in Fort Supply. The Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office will identify the remains and determine a cause of death.

Department of Corrections spokesman Jerry Massie told the Woodward News that the remains may belong to inmate Michael Weber, who escaped the minimum-security prison on Jan. 7, 2012.

Weber was discovered missing at the 10 p.m. headcount and hasn't been spotted since. He was serving a five-year prison sentence for possession of a stolen vehicle in Okmulgee County.
