An Oklahoma City man accused of beating his 91-year-old father with his fists and a cane, will now face murder charges, after his father died in the hospital.

Donald Ray Meyer, 61, is being held without bond in the Oklahoma County jail. Meyer told police, his father fell down, but police records state a witness saw him beat his father with his fists and a cane.

Police responded to an apartment complex near Penn and Memorial on Thursday morning, June 26th. They found Theodore Meyer, 91, lying curled up in a fetal position on the bedroom floor. His son, Donald was standing in the entry way.

"That's just horrible," said Jessica Veach, who lives in an apartment two floors up. "I thought this was a nice area, and I guess people can just go crazy."

Veach said she never saw Donald Meyer or his parents, and never heard of any problems coming from their apartment. A neighbor, who lives next to the family said, Donald seemed a little strange and kept to himself.

Emergency crews rushed the World War II veteran to the hospital, hoping they could save him, but he died two days later. According to court documents, Meyer had cuts to his arm, a broken rib, and a collapsed lung.

Police responded after getting a call from a witness, who saw the attack, and was helping to care for Donald's aging parents. The witness works for Joe Forrest, who is now trying to help the family deal with the tragedy.

"When you say your prayers tonight, say one for them," said Forrest. "Find ways to support them. I think that would be great."

Police are still trying to figure out what caused Meyer to beat his father to death.

"At this point, the investigation is still in the fairly early stages. It's a few days old," said Msgt. Gary Knight, Oklahoma City Police Department. "But investigators are still trying to piece together exactly what led up to the elder Meyer being attacked by his son."

News9 checked into Donald Meyer's criminal record and found he has never been arrested before.

A fund has been established at Bank First for funeral expenses for Theodore Meyer.
